Its now been nearly two months since I got on a plane and travelled around the UK and Prague as a first time solo traveller.
Despite being the height of summer here in NZ, we are in the middle of a few days of a classic summer storm – grey, wet, windy, humid. Can’t get out into the garden, don’t really want to get soaked walking, so I have been looking at my photos and finally getting round to filling in the gaps on my little blog.
It was a very strange feeling to know that I had arrived in London by myself. Yes our son was up in Cambridge, and his lovely girlfriend was in a lecture at her London university, and I had friends who I was meeting the next day; but I was responsible for myself and no one else. Strange and also liberating.
I was also feeling proud that I had got through the stress of LAX transit in one piece, hadn’t mislaid my (insert vital travel item here), found my way from Heathrow by train, and wheeled my suitcase through the backstreets of Paddington to find my tiny hotel.
For people who did their OE when they were young, this will all sound quite minor, but as a 53 year old grandmother, I was rather pleased with myself.
Here is Hyde Park on the day I landed after 24 hours in the air. Was able to get out in the sun and enjoy a perfect winter afternoon – kind of ironic when I look out the window at the grey scowling skies of Auckland.
Beautiful photos ! You should be VERY proud of doing all that alone…..just thinking about it makes me nervous. I’ve not been on a plane for 30 years…..so this is a “Herculean feat” in my book!

Thank you:-) It was hugely empowering. Living in New Zealand means getting on a plane is guaranteed if you want to go anywhere!

Congratulations on your solo trip. I think it’s important to try new things and feel that uncomfortable sense of being a beginner. It keeps me young. Beautiful photos!
